As another choir season comes to a close this weekend, I find myself reflecting on the joys and wonders of singing. There is nothing more disheartening when I hear a person say, “I can’t sing” – to which I like to respond “that’s not true!” We have a motto for our children’s choirs at Covenant: “Everyone can sing!” It is innately human to sing. Scientists have long extolled the health benefits of singing as well as the therapeutic benefits of singing together in church and community choirs.
The ancient writers of the Psalms continuously encouraged their readers to sing. “Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.” (Psalm 96). Singing requires breath, energy, thoughtfulness, and confidence. It pulls us out of ourselves. This Sunday, today, every day – take a deep breath and sing your heart out! (not just in the shower
